Welcome to Day 21 of the #40DaysOfSelfCare adventure. Whenever I feel a tad dull, hopeless, or insecure, I CREATE something.
Getting into unfamiliar territory immediately gets me familiar with the most powerful life force in my body - creativity. It is through the creative process I reconnect to inspiration, possibility, and badass courage.
Since writing is my most familiar medium, I choose to embark on creative adventures on a canvas or sketchpad. That wilderness space is sure to get me out of my comfort rut and into my creative rhythm.
Drawing shapes and mixing paint colors is a total experiment of “let’s see what happens when I do this.” I have no formal education in drawing or painting. And this is exactly why I can be daring and dangerous in these realms. Untethered from experience, it’s all a BIG experiment.
Last summer, I voyaged into the biggest creative adventure of my life. I went to Wild Roots Sacred Wings, an amazing retreat in Ojai. As the title suggested, I nurtured the roots of my innate artist, and allowed wonder, imagination, and curiosity to be the winds that allowed me to soar in the creative space like a sandhill crane.
At Wild Roots, Sacred Wings I made the prayer flags in the above photo, as well as a leather medicine bag, and a “Permission Ship” constructed of paper mache, paint, fabric, and beads. Note: Before this retreat, I had never heard of the words “embellish” and “gesso”, nor used leather-making tools.
I was in a total unfamiliar space. And it freaked me out for a moment, because I did not know what I was doing. And then, I got it. The space of the unknown IS the space of ideal and ultimate creative potential. Purusha -the unmanifested space of divine unlimited creative potential. I needed to step into the unknown to become reunited with the essential elements of every artist.
Creative sorcery. Magic charms. Complete joy. These are the essential elements that stoke the powers of intuition and possibility.
If you’re seeking a fall retreat that’s full of creative adventure and exquisite pampering, join me at the 2015 Wild Roots, Sacred Wings in Ojai this October. Yours truly will be leading daily yoga and creative mediations. And the three guides leading the creative adventures will help you foster your innate powers of possibility.
Today’s Self-Care Adventure: Create “Dreamscape Flags". It’s a super easy DIY project . Using old fabrics or clothes headed to Goodwill, cut strips of fabric 2” wide and 15” long. Tie strips on thick twine. Set a creative intention each time you tie fabric to twine. Hang flags in yard where the wind will carry your creative dreams into the world.
