Welcome to Day 12 of the #40DaysOfSelfCare adventure. Today I am sharing about my favorite aspect of PAMPER, and that is daily TREATS!
My earliest memory of enjoying treats is as a child of about 4 years old at my grandparents’ house. I typically awoke early, eager to start the day which usually consisted of tractor rides, swimming in the Mississippi River, and painting the garage wall with wild rhubarb. Everyone else would be asleep except for my Pawpaw, who would be sitting at the kitchen table peeling an orange. He’d motion to the cupboard where he stashed his black licorice. Then we’d eat oranges and licorice while he taught me how to play Solitaire.
These were magical and happy moments. To this day, when I eat black licorice I think of my Pawpaw, and always with a smile.
Another way I received treats as a kid was through books. My Mom pampered me by giving me books. She bought me this copy of “Where the Sidewalk Ends” when I was in 5th grade. In my teens, she treated me with blank journals.
These days, I love treating myself to the occasional donut or handful of chocolate candies, paired with poetry. Shel Silverstein, John O’Donohue, and Barry Spacks are some of my favorite poets. I seek these simple treats when the responsibilities of being an adult weigh heavy on my mind.
Kicking back with a snack and book makes me feel like a kid again, when such things felt like indulgences. Reading Shel’s “The Peanut Butter Sandwich” immediately lowers my stress levels and increases my happiness factor.
And this is the point of today’s self-care tip. Know what made you happy and stoked your imagination as a kid. Then lavish and pamper yourself with those treats or activities every dang day. Pamper yourself with happy indulgences.
Books make me happy. Donuts make me happy. Indulging in these treats makes me happy. Being happy is one of the greatest contributors to health and long life. (Note: donuts in moderation).
Today’s Self-Care Adventure: Make a list of the activities, foods, and items that align you with the magic of childhood joy. Stock these items in your house. Perhaps even put them in a treat jar. Be sure to pamper yourself with a daily treat. Share your favorite treat in this post.
