Welcome to Day 4 of our self-care adventure! Let’s explore the essential self-care element of “nourish”. I love the nourishing quality of food, as it allows me to flourish as an athlete and artist. Healthy food sustains vitality in the body, clarity in the mind, and creativity in the soul.
Signs of a nourishing diet: easy digestion, regular elimination, healthy glowing skin, mental clarity, a positive & relaxed attitude, and consistent energy levels throughout the day.
Nourishing through healthy foods is a sacred act of self-care. One we have an opportunity to practice several times a day, every day.
Disclaimer: I don’t scoff at the occasional donut or scowl at tater tots. However, 90% of the time, I eat a fresh, organic, mostly plant-based diet, with meals I primarily cook at home. Hey, I grew up in rural Michigan and by age 10 learned basic cooking in 4-H. I feel as cozy in the kitchen as I do in my blue jeans and cotton tee.
Yet, I support clients who have busy work schedules, a couple of kids, and a bit of angst about pans and measuring spoons. So, I know a few things about easy-peasy cooking.
Once a week, to keep meals simple AND nourishing, I make kitchari. Basically, kitchari, an Ayurvedic dish, is a dal, rice, and veggie stew. It’s a balanced source of protein and veggies, and tastes delish! As a bonus, because kitchari is so easy to digest, it supports the digestive system and helps the body naturally detox.
