Hello fellow self-care trailblazers!
Welcome to Day 2 of our self-care adventure. Think of today’s self-care tip, as a self-care trip. All successful trips begin with a map that helps charts the destination course. So, I want to briefly lay out the course for our journey by sharing the source from where #40DaysOfSelfCare blossomed.
Then, I am sending you on a little discovery trek into your yard and into the nature of your current well-being routine.
The photo above is from a vision board I created last year. In writing the mission statement for my first book about self-care, I realized that the five elements creating our Universe relate to the 5 elements I use when creating the self-care daily routines for my clients.
Our Universe and body-mind are made of Ether/Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These 5 elements create and sustain life, homeostasis, and evolution in all life forms (i.e. forests, seas, animals, and the human body). Each element has a role. Space allows for expansion. Air creates movement. Fire transforms matter into energy. Water is life-giving. Earth gives stability and shelter.
In studying Ayurveda, nature, and my body-mind, I’ve discovered that the very best self-care practices consist of five elements or actions. They are: Create. Cleanse. Nourish. Rejuvenate. Pamper.
Briefly, here’s how the 5 elements relate to the 5 actions of self-care: Ether’s quality of expansion beckons the soul to create by nourishing the inner artist. Air’s function of movement assists the body in cleansing waste and toxins from the body. The transformative fire in digestion turns food into energy. Water’s life-giving gift rejuvenates the body and spirit. And lastly, earth’s stable quality pampers and soothes.
Over the next few weeks, the self-care tips I share will support your health and well-being by stoking creativity, cleansing the digestive system, nourishing the body, rejuvenating the mind, and pampering the body.
For right now, I invite you to step outside and observe nature. This gives you a better vantage point when turning inward and observing your current health and daily routine patterns. Understanding the relationships of the elements in nature and our body-mind helps us to make better choices when it comes to self-care.
Today’s Self-Care Adventure Trail: Sit outside and observe the five elements in nature. Look at the sky. Feel the wind and warmth of sun. Notice the moisture in green leaves. Connect with the solid earth. Invite a spirit of curiosity as your trail guide, as you ask yourself the following questions: 1. What does your heart yearn to create? 2. What feels toxic and needs cleansed from your body/mind/life? 3. How do you need nourished right now? 4. Do you enjoy rest during the day? 5. What’s your favorite way to pamper yourself? Feel free to write responses in a journal or piece of paper.
p.s. The #40DaysOfSelfCare is also happening on my Instagram (@kellenbrugman) feed, so pop over there to connect with others who are on the journey with us. It’s also the place where I’ll be announcing some sweet product giveaways from folks like Aveda, KeVita, Lotus Superfoods, Life Equals and lululemon.
