Agni, the principle of fire, is the sacred transformational light and source of all life in the Universe. This same agni resides in the body and mind, as specialized energies in the vital organs and systems. The powerful energy that lights our world and turns tiny seeds into apple trees is the same energy that makes digestion flow and smiles glow.
Agni, a sanskrit word, is the origin of the latin word, "ignis" that means "ignite". It is the transformational energy for all creation and sustainability in one's body. It governs all metabolic, digestive, and functional activities in the body and mind. From turning food into energy and consciousness, to being the source of cellular intelligence, agni is an inextinguishable flame that allows for all physical and spiritual changes and growth to occur.
In the mind, healthy agni creates courage, inspiration, happiness, and joy - the essential elements to creating the dream life. It's the subtle power in the spiritual body - the spotlight of the heart. Agni in the heart/soul is the divine beacon of light shining on the pathway to the heart's desires.
And if this sounds too scientific or woo-woo, let me sum it up with this: Agni is pretty rad, so best y'all know how to stoke it.
Go ahead baby, light your fire
Agni in the body, mind, and heart is best kindled and stoked by a daily self-care routine. Self-care is the foundation of supreme health and eternal happiness. When it comes to creating the very best life, I'm talking about the kind of self-care that goes beyond kickboxing workouts, yoga classes, and green smoothies.
The truest and most potent source of health and happiness is living aligned with one's heart & soul. This naturally creates a healthier body, vital mind, and creative spirit. It allows one to cross the threshold into Purusha - the space of unlimited creative possibility. When one honors the heart, agni blazes bright. This light is what I refer to as "the spotlight of the heart."
Ayurveda, the ancient healing system from India and sister science to yoga, puts great importance on daily living practices. In my personal experience and years of working with clients, Ayurveda provides a wonderful protocol for maintaining healthy agni in the body and mind. The very best lifestyle plan uses these five essential self-care elements:
Using these elements, I create easy, effective, and enjoyable self-care routines for clients that nourish the body, mind, and heart. Self-care practices that easily weave into my clients work, family and personal lives.
The bookends of the day, morning and evening, when sunlight awakens the world and then beckons goodnight wishes, are especially sacred times to support agni in the body and mind.
The morning routine awakens the body, helps focus the mind for day, and reconnects one to their heart's creative purpose. Think of it as setting one's destination for the day, using the navigational system of the body and mind's intelligence.
Two self-care tips to stoke agni in the morning:
- To DETOX and jump start the digestive system, drink the "Rise & Shine Ayurvedic Tonic. Click here for recipe.
- To NOURISH strength and flexibility, do at least 15-20 minutes of yoga and pranayama. My morning yoga practice aligns my body and mind with my daily MITs- most important tasks. Moving with intention creates intention and elevates attention. This allows me to jam with clarity, ease, and creativity in my projects and client meetings. All my clients receive a "Sweet 16 Awakening" yoga sequence and breathing practice.
The evening routine helps one relax the body, release built-up stress from the day, and reconnect to gratitude. Think of it as clearing all distortion and creating an optimal and harmonious environment for rest and rejuvenation during sleep.
Two self-care bedtime tips to support agni during sleep:
- To PAMPER and relax the body, massage your favorite essential oil (I love lavender and Aveda's Stress-Fix oil) on legs and feet, then do legs up the wall pose for 3-5 minutes.
- To CREATE a space of sweet slumber, write down 1-3 things from the day that filled your heart with gratitude. Feelings of gratitude release serotonin and melatonin - natural sleep aids.
A daily self-care practice stokes agni and creates a natural state of health and happiness in the body and mind. One glows and life becomes infused with light and love. From this state of health and ease, magic happens. One has the clarity and courage to take leaps of faith…to step into the spotlight of the heart.
