Growing up in Michigan, the Great Lake State, I spent a lot of time swimming in lakes. Besides Lake Michigan, I swam in quite a few inland lakes, where the waterweeds always intrigued me. They created an underwater forest in which I was certain mermaids lived.
So when my friend and founder of The Healer’s Journal and Lotus Superfoods, Justin Faerman, told me about a green superfood powder that is harvested from a lake in the United States, I was intrigued. This superfood is the amazing waterweed, Hydrilla Verticillata. It’s a freshwater plant whose roots grow deep and soak up the nutrients from rich lakebed soil.
Justin gave me a package of his “Lotus Superfoods Hydrilla Verticillata”, sharing how Hydrilla is the most concentrated source of Vitamin B12 and Calcium, and thus has positive effects on mood and energy. I was even more intrigued, as at the time, my energy levels were low.
Within two weeks of taking Hydrilla, I noticed higher sustained energy levels. I also experienced less desire for sugars. No more 3 o’clock chocolate croissant cravings! In about a month, my skin was smoother and better hydrated. Note: About the same time I started taking Hydrilla, I also increased my morning Abhyanga (Ayurvedic self-massage with warm oils) from two to four times a week. These two in combo are the dynamic duo superheroes of youthful, radiant, smooth skin!
Here are other benefits I noticed after taking my daily serving of ½ tsp. Hydrilla.
- Overall, I felt better nourished. This raw, vegan superfood has the equivalent of two pounds of vegetables in one teaspoon! It is also rich in Vitamins A, B1, B6, and Niacin, as well as the essential minerals magnesium, silica, and iron.
- Digestive and elimination system felt better supported. The chlorophyll in Hydrilla has a gentle detoxing effect and helps to remove toxins from the body.
Because Hydrilla is a great source of calcium, 624 mg/T, it nourishes the bone tissue and thus supports healthy hair, teeth and nails. As an optimal source of Vitamin B12, Hydrilla supports normal functioning of the nervous system.
The Lotus Superfoods Hydrilla Verticillata is gluten free, raw, vegan and sustainably harvested. It grows in a pristine and protected lake in the United States. Due to its water habitat, I find it to be especially nurturing to my vata-type body, which tends towards dry skin.
Although most folks blend Hydrilla into their juices or smoothies, I like to drink my Hydrilla neat. Yes, it has a somewhat freshwater lake taste to it. Some would call it swampy. I prefer to call it a Mermaid Cocktail. And I like it shaken, not stirred.
